Barber of Seville is on Sky Arts this evening, performed by The Met Opera, I'm enjoying relaxing to it.

Was it a new production, Charlie? I've seen two versions on Sky Arts over the last year or so - one traditional and one starkly modern (and awful) - mind you, having said that, thank the gods for Sky Arts or we'd see no opera at all on telly!
I bet you joined in with 'Largo in factotum' - I always do! :catwink:

Hmm, not actually sure to be honest Chris, I was reading at the same time so really was listening to the music not so much watching it - lots of beautiful clarinet work in it (I used to play eons ago)
I love Sky Arts, I think I'd be lost without it.

Why do they have to do Opera/Shakespeare/other classics in modern dress? - it always grates and just looks daft.

I prefer them to keep with the correct period too, its much more special then.
Puccini's La Boheme at 8pm tonight on Sky Arts 2, it's the Australian Opera and it's director is Baz Luhrmann - will give it a go, if the dress/setting isn't right I will read and just listen to the music instead.

They don't always do that, Carole - it's a bit hit and miss - I much prefer the original stage settings myself.
The Baz Luhrman version of La Boheme is set in the 1950's and 'fits' reasonably well - it certainly knocks spots off the recent (and dire) Jonathan Miller version! :D
