You might think it's obscure but out of curiosity I looked on Amazon UK and it is for sale in three volumes (very reasonable) but no synopsis what's it about Carol?

It's the story of Lottie who has an amazing singing voice and gets used by all the men around her, all of them trying to make money out of her talent - but it would work out expensive for the 3 volumes, and it's probably not really a starter Oliphant - it means a lot to me because when it was first serialized in The Cornhill Magazine it had the wonderful drawings with it.
If anyone does like Victorian novels Margaret Oliphant is a great neglected writer - a bit like Trollope but with more of a sense of humour.
Hester - which Amazon do, isn't a bad novel. One of the main characters, Catherine Vernon actually runs the family bank, which you don't expect in a novel written in 1883, but Mrs Oliphant is very good on strong women characters whose lives are blighted by the wimpy men that surround them.
The best ones to start on are The Chronicles of Carlingford: Salem Chapel, Miss Marjoribanks and Phoebe Junior.
