It gets 4 stars in the radio times. We are thinking of trying it but am not sure if it might be too serious for a drinking night :)

Hark at the rude Anna. I enjoyed the book, but couldn't imagine the film being good.
The book is beautifully written and a pleasure to read, but I just couldn't see how they were going to make a very interesting film out of it cos nothing much happens....

I watched it - it was wonderful and I wish I'd taped it now. It's not that nothing happen, it was just very quietly paced - my kind of film. It was all sooooo beautiful, the lighting, the composition, just like steping inside one of Vermeer's own paintings. A treat :)

Wish I'd seen it now! That's exactly the qualities I loved about the book, it is a treat to read Carole :) I was so put off by Colin and Scarlett that I thought they would have ruined it so didn't bother....will have to look out for it again now:)

The first shot of Scarlett with the earring on and her head bound up with the blue ribbon was breathtaking - it was the painting EXACTLY. I haven't read the book but just have a vague knowledge of Dutch art and the whole thing really was beautiful :) The snow - the cold air .... her raw hands - just beautiful.

I really am kicking myself now then, whet an eejit! After reading the book I went to the National Gallery to look at the few Vermeers and any others they had from the period as I really wanted to know more about what the book described, .... The book is written like one of the paintings, it is all so subtle and all in the detail, I think you'd like it.

And I think you'd like the film! Although to be honest I'm never very keen on watching film adapations of books I've read because the pictures don't match the ones in my head - perhaps it helped me not to have read it first.
