saw the tv trailer last night - looks intersting - if its half as good as the ones the did about mary stuart then elizabeth 1st it will be an autumn blockbuster during the dismal nights drawing in...talking about dismal knights I allways laugh at the lads in hose in these dramas, somehow they dont look as good as at the ballet a la nuraev do they ( specially not henry eight!)

I have grave reservations - the blurb in the Radio Times talks glibly of the 'history' being updated to suit modern tastes - in other words 'dumbed down' - and the main character is a shaven-headed munter who bears no resemblance at all to the young Henry VIII who was described by his contemporaries as having 'glorious auburn hair and as beautiful as a woman'
The only reason a man would wear his hair like that in those days would be if he was being prepared to be burned at the stake - shaving hair off was done to humiliate a criminal.
This smacks of the truly horrendous 'Robin Hood' series of last year in which, apparently, hair bleach and heavy eyemakeup were the norm amongst mediaeval women - and let's not mention the acting - what has happened to the BBC?????
I'm ranting, aren't I?:combusti:

hahaha i think it is a very worthy rant!!
it really bugs me when i watch these kind of programmes, and the women all have perfectly plucked eyebrows and no leg hair!!!

Just read the Radio times blurb too, it looks like a mini bonkathon!
I have to say though Henry is rather hunky!

well, as I have read a lot about the Tudor period I guess I'll spot a mile away whether or not they are just dramatising and glossing over the historical facts. Apparently the actor jonathan rhys myers I think, was suprised to be cast as he looks nothing like the early Henry, I was dismayed about that too.. it has already been shown in America, will have to wait & see I suppose...

Each to her own, Pips, good for you! :D
I'll be interested to hear how you think it holds up historically, Tina - I won't be watching it - I just noticed all of the women have their hair flowing loose too - I thought only very young girls (and tarts) wore their hair down in Tudor times?

yes you are right Lucia, it would not have acceptable in those times, they wore French Hoods after Anne Boleyn's time, and they laughed like a drain when Anne of Cleeves came over wearing a hood that completely covered her hair. They liked to show a little hair, and little of the bosom (sp) but flowing hair would have been a state of undress...
